Umbrella” is a song recorded by Barbadian R&B singer Rihanna, featuring a rap verse by rapper Jay-Z. The song was written by The-Dream, Christopher Stewart, Kuk Harrell and Jay-Z, and was produced by Stewart. It was released as the lead single for Rihanna’s third studio album, Good Girl Gone Bad. The track was released worldwide on March 29, 2007, and since its release, “Umbrella” has been covered by many artists worldwide and became a zeitgeist hit in pop culture.

Critics gave positive reviews of the song, many appreciating the “ella, ella” hook. It is generally considered her signature song and achieved commercial success by topping charts in Australia, Canada, Germany, France, the Republic of Ireland, Sweden, Switzerland, the United Kingdom, and the United States, as well as reaching the top ten in many other countries. In the United Kingdom, where the song’s chart performance generated controversy when the country was experiencing excessive flooding and large amounts of rain at the time, it is deemed an iconic song and was one of the most played songs on radio in the 2000s. It managed to stay at number-one on the UK Singles Chart for ten consecutive weeks, the longest run at number one for any single of that decade. Following a successful chart performance worldwide and a positive reception from critics, the song is listed number three on the 100 Best Songs of 2007 published by Rolling Stone magazine.

Rihanna performed “Umbrella” at the 2007 MTV Movie Awards and was the closing song of the Good Girl Gone Bad and the Last Girl on Earth tours. The accompanying music video features Rihanna covered in silver paint. In 2008, “Umbrella” earned Rihanna and Jay-Z a Grammy Award for Best Rap/Sung Collaboration in addition to receiving nominations for Record of the Year and Song of the Year.

While working on the album, ideas began to circulate concerning Rihanna’s image, extending into her music videos. She asked American music video director Chris Applebaum to send her “something” to work on. Def Jam representatives were expecting Applebaum of the treatment. In response, Applebaum hurriedly made a treatment for the video, one of his first ideas being the silver body paint that Rihanna is seen in. Applebaum was doubtful whether Rihanna would embrace the idea, but her “positive response” following a letter the director sent to the artist ensured its approval. Makeup artist Pamela Neal mixed a silver paint that would give Rihanna such a look. During the session, the paint was re-applied between takes to ensure she was completely covered. The set was closed to Rihanna, Applebaum and a camera assistant. Rihanna also contributed her own ideas towards the video shoot, suggesting to Applebaum that she dance en pointe, an idea which he accepted. The music video premiered on April 26, 2007 at her website. Downloads were made available for those in the U.S. only from the website for a limited time. The video was officially released on the iTunes Store on May 11, 2007, peaking at number one for a period of eight weeks. On May 1, 2007, “Umbrella” debuted on MTV’s Total Request Live at number 10, before reaching number one on May 9 where it remained for fifteen days, making it the longest running number one of 2007. The video was well-played in MTV during the second half of 2007; it has reached over 8,000 plays, receiving a platinum recognition at the MTV Platinum and Gold Video Awards.  Such was the success of the promotional video that it received five nominations at the 2007 MTV Video Music Awards, including “Female Artist of the Year”, “Video of the Year” and “Monster Single of the Year”, going on to win the latter two

Love Story” is a country pop song performed by American singer-songwriter Taylor Swift. The song was self-penned by Swift and produced by Nathan Chapman, alongside Swift. It was released on September 12, 2008 by Big Machine Records, as the lead single from Swift’s second studio album Fearless. The song was written about a love interest of Swift’s who was not popular among Swift’s family and friends. Because of the scenario, Swift related to the plot of William Shakespeare‘s Romeo and Juliet (1597) and used it as a source of inspiration to compose the song. However, she replaced Romeo and Juliet‘s original tragic conclusion with a happy ending. It is a midtempo song with a dreamy tenor, while the melody continually builds up. The lyrics have Swift narrating from the perspective of Juliet Capulet.

The song was a critical success with critics complimenting Swift’s writing style and the song’s plot. It was also a commercial success, selling over 6.5 million copies worldwide since January 2010, therefore establishing itself among of the best-selling singles of all time. In the United States, the song peaked at number four on the Billboard Hot 100 and sold over 5 million digital downloads, becoming Swift’s best-selling single to date. It was also deemed one of the best-selling singles in the United States and was once the best-selling country single of all time. The single was certified quintuple platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA). Internationally, “Love Story” became Swift’s first and only number one single in Australia thus far and certified triple platinum by the Australian Recording Industry Association (ARIA).

The song’s accompanying music video was directed by Trey Fanjoy, who directed all of Swift’s prior videos. The video is a period piece that drew influences from Medieval, Renaissance, and Pride and Prejudice (1813) eras. It follows Swift and model Justin Gaston as they meet in a university campus and imagine themselves in a prior era. “Love Story” was promoted through numerous live performances. The song was included on Swift’s first and second headlining tours, the Fearless Tour (2009—10) and the Speak Now World Tour (2011), respectively; the song was used as the final performance on the latter. “Love Story” has been covered by several artists, including Joe McElderry and Forever the Sickest Kids.

The accompanying music video for “Love Story” was directed by Trey Fanjoy, who previously directed the videos for the singles from Taylor Swift. Swift decided to collaborate with Fanjoy once again because she had been able to balance both of their ideas for music videos, something Swift appreciated deeply. The video is a period piece that draws influence from Medieval, Renaissance, and Pride and Prejudice (1813) eras. Swift had previously desired to film a period piece music video because of its distinctiveness from modern videos and videos she had filmed. However, she chose for the video to set in the time period, for she envisioned it as such when writing the song and, therefore, encoded visuals into it. She believed “Love Story”‘s plot was a timeless scenario: “I think it could happen in the 1700s, the 1800s, or 2008.” It influenced her to search for a timeless quality in demeanor of her love interest. With six months in advanced, Swift searched for a countless actors to interpret the role through watching films. Someone who had been watching the sixth season of the reality television series Nashville Star recommended contestant Justin Gaston. Swift then looked through his pictures and concluded he was suitable for the music video. Gaston fulfilled the requirements Swift had set out, describing him as a “Prince Charming that could’ve been alive in the 1800s.” However, because Gaston was competing on Nashville Star, he was unable to participate in the music video. Gaston was eventually eliminated and Swift contacted him immediately to film the video. Swift was very impressed by Gaston’s acting skills: “I was so impressed by the way his [expressions] were in the video. Without even saying anything, he would just do a certain glance and it really came across well.”

The video commences with Swift, clothed by a black sweater and jeans, walking through a university campus and spotting Gaston sitting under a tree, reading a textbook. As they make eye contact, the video then transitions to an earlier era, in castle, where Swift stands, wearing a corset and gown, and performs in a balcony. After, Gaston enters a party and sees Swift, wearing a ball gown, conversing with other females. The two engage, along with others, engage in ballroom dancing. After dancing, Gaston whispers into Swift’s ear and Swift is then seen pondering at night with a lantern. She meets with Gaston and the two walk, hold hands, and feed a horse by a well. The two then go their separate paths. Afterward, Swift stands in the balcony, looking out from the a window. She sees Gaston running toward her and immediately runs down the staircase. Swift and Gaston meet each other and hold each other. The video then transcends back into modern-day as Gaston walks toward Swift and they gaze into each others’ eyes, where the video concludes. Cut-scenes feature ballroom dancing and Swift performing in the balcony setting.

Big Girls Don’t Cry” is a song written by Fergie and Toby Gad for pop singer Fergie’s debut solo album The Dutchess (2006). The song was released as the album’s fourth single in 2007 (see 2007 in music) and topped the charts in several countries, most notably in Australia (for nine consecutive weeks—also becoming the number-one single in the ARIA‘s Year End Charts for 2007), and in the United States. It was the most downloaded track in the U.S., with sales of more than 3,080,000 copies sold. In July 2007, Fergie performed the song at the Concert for Diana and Live Earth. By the end of August 2007, the song became Fergie’s third number one single on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. It was nominated in the ‘Best Female Pop Vocal Performance‘ category at the 50th Annual Grammy Awards, which was held February 10, 2008. The song appears in Dance Dance Revolution X, Singstar Pop Vol 2, and Karaoke Revolution Presents American Idol Encore 2. The song was listed at #89 on Billboard: All-Time Hot 100 Top Songs and the 13th most successful song of the decade at the end of 2009 on the Billboard Hot 100 Songs of the Decade. It was also named the 8th most successful pop song of the decade (Mainstream Top 40).

The music video was directed by Anthony Mandler and began production on March 30, 2007. The video had a ‘First Look’ on MTV‘s TRL on May 16, 2007 and peaked at #5 on May 24, 2007. The video topped VH1’s Top 40 Videos of 2007 list. Milo Ventimiglia plays Fergie’s love interest. The video begins with Fergie getting out of her car (a red 1969 Mustang fastback) and going inside a warehouse where she meets her band and practices. Meanwhile, she is seen singing next to her boyfriend, who is sleeping. She starts walking through the house, and is then watching herself and her boyfriend from a different point of view getting out of her car. They go into the house, and her boyfriend gets out a guitar and starts playing, while Fergie is singing. Later on, she sees her boyfriend out the window with several guys, one of whom passes him a small package, which is presumably drugs, and it upsets her. Fergie then starts singing the chorus while she is taking her clothes off a clothes line and putting them into a suitcase. As the third verse begins, Fergie is walking around a warehouse singing while wearing a tan-gray baby doll dress. At the end of the song, she is seen getting into her car and driving down the road. There are two music videos: the main version features the garage scene mixed with the others; the extended, in which the song is performed twice, the first time it was sang features all the scenes, excluding the garage scenes, the second time it only features unseen garage scenes and the normal garage sensual scenes. A remix was made of the song in late 2007, which retained the vocals of the original, but with a new, 1980s-reminiscent sound, with none of the acoustic guitars present in the original. Titled the “Big Girls Remix”, it featured reggae star Sean Kingston, who records his vocals over the new beat and after his verses, it goes into the chorus of the original and basically maintains Fergie’s vocals for the rest of the song. A video was also made for this version.

It kind of depends on how you look at it? In one way, it is because me and ‘the guy’ in the video aren’t together anymore, and I think that’s a better thing.”
